Custom bed design for a little girl's bedroom...

Based on our Shabby Princess bedroom suite, a client asked us to make a few few modifications to the design to match existing bedroom furniture.
The bed was painted in broken white and dry-brush detail added onto certain panels.
We also designed a pullout bed for the bedroom set, in a matching design and paint technique.

Of course, no Shabby Chic bed would be complete without our unique hand made rose design. This one was custom made to feature a butterfly.
We use the finest imported clay to craft our unique shabby rose designs, or hand make designs to request.
Basic Philosopy - Keep it fresh, add plenty of colour and buy furniture that will last.
Girls aged between 2 to 8 love to participate in fantasy. They are most comfortable in a bedroom that provides a cocoon for play and imagination.

At this young age a bedroom should be clean and simple, but still incorporate elements that appeal to a little girl.
There are many themes and styles that appeal to little girls, and these can include: butterflies, flowers, angels, princess, cartoon and animation characters and similar.
Although it would be nice to go over the top and decorate the room to excess, it is best to keep furniture as simple as possible - something that will grow up with your daughter and still be suitable for use as she grows older.

Design-A-Bed believes that it is important to manufacture furniture for children so that it will endure and last a long time. So many manufacturers are opting for cheap chipboard construction that will not stand up to continuous abuse and the knocks of everyday use. At Design-A-Bed we use 16mm PG Bison SupaWood, with a solid base and still manage to keep our children's bedroom furniture at a reasonable price - no compromise!
When choosing bedroom furniture and accessories for a little girl - be practical. If you are not planning to replace furniture in the next 5 or more years, choose furniture that will grow with your child and offer plenty of storage. A three-quarter bed might seem extravagant now, but will see your child through to her late teens with the addition of a quality mattress. Look for furniture that offers plenty of storage, or let us manufacture specific furniture to your requirements.

Bedroom furniture for a little girl - or a girl of any age - needs to incorporate plenty of storage.
A bed with pullout bed or storage drawer will not take up any additional floor space, but is ideal for when your daugher has sleepovers, or needs extra storage space.
Ideally, the bedside table should have drawer space, or a shelf or two.
Additional storage can be provided by a chest of drawers, a wardrobe and a toybox.
Again, a toybox that also serves at a seat - with an upholstered top - will provide not only storage space, but extra seating as well.

Design and decorate a bedroom for a little girl with things that she loves. Incorporate her favourite colours into the room by painting walls and adding accessories, bedding, curtains and art. A few carefully selected accessories can make all the difference to any bedroom for a little girl.
A four-poster bed with canopy makes a little girl feel like she is a princess and the drapes can always be removed later on as she grows up.

Don't overpower the room with too much bold colour, rather keep it calm and subtle. If you want to add splashes of bright colour use small accessories here and there around the room.
Little girls love pastel shades, particularly pink and lilac.
For contrast think lime green with pink, or pink with chocolate brown or a pale blue with pale yellow.
LEFT: This blue and yellow bedroom for a little girl is fresh and sunny without being too colourful. Use this colour in a north-facing room that gets hot during the summer months.
As a retreat and a place to play, a bedroom should be calming and serene.

Be creative when choosing accessories for a little girl's bedroom. Match any accessories to the colour of the bedroom and the style you have chosen. BELOW: A charming glass chandelier (picked up at a secondhand shop) is topped off with pink lampshades that perfectly match the colour of the bedroom. An old rattan basket is given new life with a gingham inner that also matches the fabric covered storage boxes and tins.

Designing and decorating a bedroom for a little girl can be lots of fun for everyone. Mom and daughter should work together when choosing furniture, colour and accessories. Use coloured card and cut out the butterflies, attaching to the wreath with a hot glue gun. [jasey's crazy daisy]
EASY FABRIC FLOWERS: Cut fabric to 12cm wide x 50cm long strips, fold in half and press with a warm iron. Open up strip and sew a gathering stitch along the pressed seam. Fold back into place. BASIC WINDOW VALANCE FOR GIRLS BEDROOM: Buy enough fabric to cover the width and length of window with extra for seams. Hem all edges. Fold the fabric in half and sew a pocket rod opening at the top. Cut 4 pieces of ribbon and place equally along the top edge - folded over the top of the valance and then sew on at the pocket rod stitch line. Spread the valance out on the floor and roll the bottom up neatly. Hand stitch along the roll to keep it in place (you want it to look like the ribbons are keeping the roll in place but the few hidden stitches actually keep it in place). Insert a dowel rod and hang onto the wall with three small brackets at each end and in the centre. [love your room]

ABOVE:A charming pink bedroom that would work just as well for 2 year old princess or an 18 year old fashionista. The hand made appliqued rose duvet cover works well with the frilly cushion and curtains, soft lime green walls and white vintage furniture.
Window treatments and curtains for a little girls bedroom can be as fun as you want, but do keep them fairly simple. For privacy add venetian or roller blinds as the main window treatment, top off with a decorative valance in a colourful contrasting fabric and dress the sides with hanging curtains that match colours in the room.

ABOVE: This little girls bedroom is fit for a princess. A simple ruffled valance tops off the window. Sew a rod pocket at the top of the fabric and insert a curtain pole to mount on the wall. Be sure to have lots of fabric for plenty of ruffles!

ABOVE: Rows and rows of tulle fabric create this wonderful ballerina valance for a little lady.

DRAPES AND CORONETS: Adding a coronet above a little girls bed is a wonderful way to introduce a fairytale or princess theme into a bedroom.
A coronet can be a simple design that has a sheer hanging curtain, or a more elaborate custom-made design that incorporates layers of fabric.

DAYBEDS AND SEATING: In a small girls bedroom, a daybed serves as dual purpose furniture, providing plenty of space for daytime seating when friends come to play, and a place to sleep at night. There are so many options to decorate and incorporate a daybed into a bedroom. A day bed will last through to her teens, doubling as a sofa for reading or chatting to friends.

DECORATING A SHARED BEDROOM: Decorating a small shared bedroom can be difficult. There may not be enough room for two three-quarter - or even single beds - in the room. If this is the case, consider a space saver bed that frees up floor space by incorporating plenty of storage. When decorating a shared bedroom for two little girls, try to keep the decor simple and use matching furniture and colours. Each child can easily incorporate elements that reflect their personal style with artwork above the bed.

WALL ART, WALL STICKERS AND WALL MURALS: Add some fun to a little girls bedroom with wall art, wall stickers or wall murals. It's the easy way to add elements to your daughters room and is easy to cover up with a coat or two of paint when she gets tired of it.
If you're artistic enough you can easily copy and transfer designs onto a wall and then paint them.
No money for a chandelier for your daughter's bedroom? Paint a chandelier mural on the wall above the bed.

CHILDRENS WALL ART AND BEDROOM CLOCKS: You can add personality and interest to a little girls bedroom with wall art, custom bedroom wall clocks, personal names in cut out letters, and other decor accessories.
Design-A-Bed offers hand painted wall clocks for any style, theme or bedroom colour.

DECORATING FOR A BOY WHO IS SPORT MAD

DECORATE A BOYS BEDROOM WITH FABRIC: Where a theme bed is not on the cards, add a theme to a boys bedroom with fabric and accessories. In the sport-themed boys bedroom above a wall border, window valance and rug pull together the cushions and small accessories in the room.

FLOORING FOR A BOYS BEDROOM: Let's be honest, boys can be messy. As an alternative to hard flooring, carpet tiles provide a softer flooring option and can easily be replaced if damaged or spoilt. For a childrens bedroom consider flooring options such as laminate wood, bamboo floors, carpet tiles or luxury cushion vinyl, which is now making a big comeback.

PAINT TECHNIQUES FOR BEDROOM WALLS: Chalkboard paint is just one of the many paint techniques that are ideal for a children bedroom. They allow children to be creative over and over again and then simply wipe clean. However, a chalkboard is best in a bedroom that has solid flooring rather than carpeting, as cleaning up can be messy.

HOW TO ADD COLOUR TO A BOYS BEDROOM: Colour can easily be introduced with bedding, curtains and accessories. A few fabric covered notice board on the wall will add splashes of colour to a plain white background and the room will be visually larger if walls are left white.

CHOOSING COLOUR FOR A BOYS BEDROOM: Traditional colours such as red, white and blue will always be a lasting favourite for decorating a boys bedroom, These colours can be incorporated in all different hues and shades to provide light and solid colour to a childrens bedroom.

Spacesaver beds are the most practical childrens beds for a boy or girl in a small bedroom. A spacesaver bed provides for either a pullout bed, or additional storage drawers for essential storage. Design-A-Bed offer a range of spacesaving childrens beds in a choice of colours of styles.

DECORATING A SHARED BEDROOM FOR BOYS: Where two boys have t o share a bedroom, make sure to allocate enough sleeping and study or place space for each child.

It is often the case that two young boys, or siblings of an older age, have to share a bedroom. Sharing a bedroom doesn't have to mean a cramped space that has no personality. There are many ways to provide sleeping and play or study space, and our Spacesaver Beds are just one of the ways.
Another stylish option is to have two single Desk Beds, where boys can sleep and have a study desk incoporated into a single piece of furniture to save on space.
At Design-A-Bed we are not a big fan of bunk or loft beds, especially in view of the high-accident rate associated with this type of furniture when used for young children, and we prefer to offer our spacesaving range as an alternative.
